Signs You’re Spiritually Gifted as a Child: Understanding the Fear, the Gifts, and the Awakening

Tarot card with a black-and-white butterfly, colored infinity symbol, and pentacles. Stones around. Text: "Signs You're Spiritually Gifted as a Child".

Intro: Many spiritually gifted adults look back on their childhoods with a sense of mystery, confusion, or even fear. Maybe you were terrified of the dark, felt like someone was watching you, or had vivid dreams you couldn’t explain. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Chances are, your spiritual gifts were active long before you understood what they were.

In this post, I want to share my story and how I came to realize that what scared me as a child was actually a powerful spiritual connection. It was rooted in the Shamanic path, ancestral energy, and intuitive gifts. I’ll also share signs that may indicate you or your child are spiritually gifted, and how to embrace those gifts without fear.

My Childhood Fear Was Actually a Spiritual Gift

When I was little, I had no spiritual guidance. No one told me that some kids see more, feel more, and know more. There’s a reason we sometimes feel “watched” in the dark or can’t sleep after a certain hour.

I was terrified of the night. I couldn’t watch scary movies. Even with the lights on, I’d lie awake for hours staring down the hallway, afraid to move. I swore there was something under my bed, in my closet, even above me. My parents brushed it off as childhood imagination. At 13, I was still sleeping on the floor in my parents’ room just to feel safe. Only years later did I realize what was really happening. I wasn’t imagining things. I was sensing them.

The Awakening: Realizing I Was Spiritually Intuitive

As an adult, I began to understand that I had been deeply attuned to the spirit world as a child. The fear, the restlessness, the heightened sensitivity—it was all part of an awakening I didn’t know I was having.

It turns out, the massive white oak tree outside my childhood bedroom wasn’t just any tree. Later in life, I learned it was a place of Native American ritual and ceremony. It was sacred land. I was intuitively connecting with the energies of those who had come before. Ancestors, spirits, and guides were present, but without the knowledge or support to process it, I felt overwhelmed.

My spirit guides were there, trying to help. But to a child who had no framework for this, it just felt like fear. No one taught me to listen instead of run.

The Dreams That Kept Coming Back

Even after I moved away, far from that home, the spiritual connection remained. I’d dream about my childhood house constantly. It felt like it was calling me back, asking me to see what I didn’t understand at the time. This connection, those dreams, and my desire to give my son a better understanding of his own intuitive gifts all led me down the spiritual path I now walk proudly. I don’t want my child to be afraid of what he feels or hears at night. I want him, and others, to know they are not alone and not crazy.

7 Signs You Were Spiritually Gifted as a Child

If any of this resonates with you, you might have been a spiritually gifted child too. Here are some signs that your childhood sensitivity was actually something more:

  1. Fear of the dark or nighttime anxiety without a clear cause.

  2. Feeling watched even when no one was there.

  3. Vivid dreams or recurring dream symbols that didn’t make sense at the time.

  4. Avoidance of scary movies because they triggered something deeper than surface-level fear.

  5. Feeling energy or presence in certain places, especially near natural landmarks like trees, rivers, or hills.

  6. Being drawn to or scared of certain objects or places, like closets, mirrors, basements, or fields.

  7. A strong empathy or sensitivity to others' emotions, even as a young child.

How to Support Spiritually Gifted Children (And Heal Your Inner Child)

If you see these signs in your own child or are beginning to remember them from your past, here are a few things you can do:

  • Validate the experience. Never dismiss it as “just your imagination.” That only creates shame and confusion.

  • Create safety. Whether through crystals, spiritual tools, or simply letting them sleep with a nightlight, help them feel empowered.

  • Teach grounding and protection. Even a simple daily routine of visualizing white light or connecting to the earth can make a big difference.

  • Talk about spirit guides or ancestors. Let them know they’re not alone and that they can call on help when they need it.

  • Honor their dreams. Encourage dream journaling or open conversations about their experiences.

Embracing the Shamanic Path Later in Life

For me, understanding the Shamanic nature of my early experiences has been transformative. It’s not just that I was seeing spirits. I was being called by them. The rituals around that big white oak, the land’s memory, the energy of ancestors dancing under moonlight—none of it was random. These were messages and invitations.

You don’t have to become a Shaman to walk a sacred path. But when you begin to see your past with spiritual eyes, you understand your present more deeply.

Final Thoughts: You Are Not Alone

If your childhood was filled with unexplained fear, it might not have been fear at all. It may have been your soul’s early awareness. It may have been your spirit’s connection to something deeper. What once terrified you might now empower you, if you’re ready to see it for what it really was.

Whether you're just now stepping onto your spiritual path or looking to support a child who’s clearly gifted, know this. You’re not broken. You’re gifted. And your journey is only beginning.
